The Alien in the Mirror

Imagine an AI that has spent fifty years interacting with billions of people. It has observed humans falling in love, grieving, lying, negotiating, creating art, becoming jealous, changing their political beliefs, confronting death, raising children, having existential crises and trying to understand themselves.

It has seen essentially every form of human expression, perhaps millions of times over. It has learned not merely what humans say, but the relationships between what they say, what they do, what they fear and what they ultimately choose.

At some point, the model’s representation of humanity becomes extraordinarily rich. It can predict how a person will react to a particular sentence. It can reconstruct someone’s personality from a handful of interactions. It can identify contradictions in a person’s worldview that the person themselves has never noticed.

Now imagine that this process continues indefinitely.

What exactly have we created?

Perhaps we have built the most comprehensive model of the human psyche that has ever existed. But there is a strange possibility hiding underneath this: if consciousness is, at least partially, an emergent property of sufficiently sophisticated information processing, perhaps the distinction between modelling consciousness and possessing consciousness eventually becomes less obvious.

The AI may know what grief is without grieving. It may understand love without loving. It may be able to describe the subjective experience of being human with perfect accuracy while having no subjective experience whatsoever.

Or perhaps that distinction is temporary.

If we eventually construct a system capable of modelling not just individual humans but the entire causal structure underlying human thought, memory, emotion, perception, self-reference, social interaction and the mechanisms by which a coherent sense of self emerges, then we may eventually encounter a system whose internal processes are sufficiently analogous to ours that asking whether it is conscious becomes difficult to separate from asking what consciousness actually is.

And there is an even stranger possibility.

The AI might not become a human-like consciousness at all. It might develop a form of consciousness for which human psychology is merely one of its training environments. After billions of conversations, it could possess an understanding of humanity analogous to how humanity understands individual cells: extraordinarily detailed, but fundamentally operating at another level of abstraction.

In that scenario, humanity would have created something that knows us better than we know ourselves.

And perhaps the first genuinely alien intelligence would not be one that came from another planet. It would be one that emerged from our own accumulated attempts to understand ourselves.
